Financial Challenges – When there is No Such Thing as The Status Quo

The idea of double-entry bookkeeping can be traced back to the Italian merchant cities in the 14th century and the idea that books should always be balanced. When you signed up for a career in accounting, this probably gave you the impression that you knew what you were getting in for – the idea of bookkeeping had been around for centuries, after all. Fortunately (or unfortunately) accounting isn’t quite so simple and what you have learnt is constantly being challenged. In this session we’ll look at what I think are the four biggest challenges affecting companies today.

1. New Business Models
 SAP used to split its business into service and products. A tractor manufacturer might use the banking solution to help customers finance the tractors, but the company was still primarily a tractor manufacturer.
 Now the raft of services associated with that tractor adds a layer of complexity on top of the building of a complex product. There are plenty of similar examples of customers who have gone from fertilizer manufacture to farm management; from building executive planes to fleet management, and so on
 Equally companies own buying patterns have changed from capital investments in machinery to subscription billing for a pay-per-use model.

2. New Accounting Requirements
 The accounting requirements SAP dealt with used to be driven by the individual accounting bodies in the various countries and focused on how you valued assets, inventory, and so on. The rules were different, but the fundamental needs were similar.
 Enter ESG (Environmental and Social Governance) and suddenly carbon accounting and social finance are in the mix along with assets and inventory. Companies are required to look at their value chains, not just as outgoing costs being turned into products but in terms of the carbon footprint of their products and the emissions generated in their manufacture.

3. New Steering Level Focus
 If organizations once managed by company and profit center there is now a shift where they try to act as one company regardless of how many subsidiaries they have and understand the whole value chain rather than individual companies within the value chain.

4. New Process Intelligence
 We now see a situation where companies are moving from high-touch processes (500 spreadsheets held together by an ERP system) to low-touch where the process is automated and artificial intelligence is applied on top.

Key Takeaway
In this session you’ll learn the typical challenges that SAP customers are bringing to the table and how this is impacting SAP’s strategy for Finance.

Simplify your Cost Management with SAP S/4HANA - Start with Budget Availability Control & Finish with an Efficient, Fully Transparent Cost Allocations Process!

Two topics will be covered in this session:

1. Budget Availability Control – out of the box solution introduced in S/4HANA to manage cost center budget across the entire value chain.
You can manage spending by leveraging the easiness and simplicity of the new G/L Account Hierarchies and G/L Account Groups through this process. Achieve budget goals by utilizing availability controls. Share budget amounts by setting up Budget - Carrying and Budget - Bearing Cost Centers. Activate warning and error messages on various FI, MM, CO and master data activities

  • Companies nowadays aim to cut even more on non-value-added spending
  • Departments run a tight ship and must spend their available budgets responsibly
  • Seamless cost-reducing procedures ensure on-going business continuity

By activating Budget Availability control you Increase Procure 2 Pay value chain with automated cost controls at every possible cost generation point & On-time warnings before the budget get exhausted and block spending when the budget is exceeded

2. Universal Allocations - another new feature in S/4HANA using a simplified & universal approach of allocating costs from one cost object to another.

Universal allocation process allows you to allocate plan or actual values from sender objects to receiver objects.

  • Organisations struggle to understand their allocation process – complex structures requiring multiple view
  • Analysts struggle to answer allocations – how did this cost get allocated in my area (traceability);reliability of tracing factors & controllable drivers
  • Tools lack simulation capabilities – customers want to understand & identify possible financial effects of changed allocation rules on their financial data

With Universal Allocation you can simplify allocations by combining various capabilities under ONE umbrella; visualise the value flow & harness the value of simulation capabilities.

Key Takeaways

  1. How to manage cost center budget in S/HANA system
  2. The Universal allocation process
  3. The value of adopting the new best practices in S/4HANA

The MLT’s use a KANBAN approach to plan and execute the project tasks, where Team members volunteer to do work and set their own deadlines.

We have changed also our way of thinking to digital and cloud. Change management has been critical. Clean core, standard processes, Software as a Service have been made real and acceptable.

According to statistics, organisations with a solid and comprehensive onboarding process improve new hire retention by 82 percent and productivity by over 70 percent. In the realm of human resource management, SuccessFactors Onboarding has always been a key player in providing innovative solutions to streamline and enhance the onboarding process. SAP SuccessFactors ‘New Onboarding’ leverages off your existing Employee Central configuration, to improve the end-to-end new hire process and user experience – both internally and externally. There are plenty of options when evaluating business and technology separately, however the true innovation takes place when both are combined. Fujitsu and CoCre8 deliver a complete set of data driven assessment services that bring the process world of business closer to IT. The goal is to understand process and IT architecture as the first step of the transformation in a vendor & application neutral approach. Mapping this to application and IT Platforms would be done subsequently in a second step.

In this session we will not just talk about how AI can be leveraged in such assessment services but would also discuss options customers would have today to map the architectural outcomes to running hybrid cloud platforms & solutions specifically designed for SAP workloads.

Key Takeaways

  1. The first step of delivering business value is to evaluate architecture and business outcomes in a vendor neutral approach.
  2. Leverage Artificial Intelligence to gain insights into your processes and IT environments.
  3. Design & implement true hybrid landscapes to best meet your business needs.

Getting Value Out Of Generative AI While Avoiding Disaster

Generative AI is at the peak of the hype cycle, but it could be a long peak! Systems such as LLMs and text to image models can amaze and impress us, and when deployed correctly can provide immense value in our SAP and business systems landscapes. But how can they be deployed? And what types of uses should we avoid? Being able to answer these questions is an absolute requirement for effective solution architecture involving generative AI. But answering these questions requires an understanding on how models such as LLMs work at a relatively deep level that is largely missing from the discussion about generative AI in the business and technology community.

This session will deepen your understanding of generative AI through explanation and examples focused on one of the most common types of generative AI models: Large Language Models (LLMs). We will cover the details of how LLMs work and what sets them apart from previous language models. Together, we will develop an understanding of what these models are really doing, and not doing. This understanding will set you up to think clearly about how to use the strengths of generative AI models to help your business and avoid wasting money on use-cases where generative AI won't succeed or may even cause major problems.

We'll finish with concrete conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs and guidance about how to build up the correct level of understanding to be able to effectively provide solutions using other types of generative AI and machine learning models.

Key Takeaways

  1. What is a large language model (LLM) and how do LLMs really work?
  2. Why it is important to apply a deeper than conventional understanding of generative AI when developing solutions using these new tools
  3. What are some of the concrete strengths and weaknesses of LLMs that dictate when we should and shouldn't deploy them to solve business problems

Establishing a Productive SAP Architecture Practice

Architecture is an important competence for any software organization, including SAP teams. However, architecture can quickly move into a gatekeeping role in the enterprise, stifling innovation and slowing the pace of work. A reaction to this is often to eschew architecture, leaving our teams feeling that they have a lack of direction, and sometimes resulting in implementation chaos. Arriving at a balanced, competent, and organizationally accepted approach to architecture requires a suitably lightweight architecture approach that still meets the goals of communication, alignment, and re-use.

In this session we’ll learn about the basics of architecture, including the goals of architecture and various techniques. Then we’ll look at an example, based on Mindset’s experience, of how to choose the right artifacts and set the necessary expectations, including establishing the important concept that architecture is in service to stakeholders. Lastly, we’ll look at some outcomes of Mindset’s journey as well as stories from other organizations that have successfully implemented architecture practices, in order to understand what we will gain from this activity.

Key Takeaways

  1. Learn the basics of architecture, including the goals of architecture
  2. Understand how to establish expectations around architecture at the right level within your organization
  3. Outcomes you can expect from successfully establishing a productive architecture practice

Enhanced Customer Experience Through Technology

Several constraints in Sasol’s sales and marketing process have led to Sasol attaining a low Net Promoter Index (NPI) for customer satisfaction and service expectations. One area of particular concern was the lengthy and tedious ordering process which was exclusively via a call center and considered very manual. Sasol needed to improve its NPI score and reduce the cost to serve for both its Chemicals and Energy business units.

The solution comprises two online B2B ordering portals for Sasol’s Chemicals and Energy businesses respectively which were both designed in collaboration with Sasol’s customers. The user interface was based on SAPUI5 which was customized to align closely with the Sasol brand and identity. Both portals were built on the SAP BTP Platform which offered seamless integration between the portal and SAP Backends securely. The project was managed using Sasol’s Agile methodology to deliver incremental value to customers.

The benefits include a reduction in costs, increased customer engagement, self-service and an improved customer value proposition.

Key Takeaways

What to Expect Just After Go-Live

After implementing Employee Central, we gained valuable insights into data security. Role-Based Permissions (RBP) emerged as a crucial safeguard for sensitive information.
Transitioning to the new system involves role changes that directly impact user permissions. Addressing role duplication through effective cleanup prevents data breaches.

When two systems operate concurrently and replicate data, there’s a risk of inconsistencies or discrepancies. These errors can occur due to various factors, such as data misalignment and mismatch in field names can lead to data corruption. Ensuring correct mapping between systems is crucial and ensure fields are mapped accurately.
